Master of Arts (MA) Programme in Theology
In September 2023 St. Michael’s College (SMC), a Roman Catholic institution of the Archdiocese of Kingston, Jamaica, will resume teaching its Master of Arts degree in Theology to be awarded by the University of the West Indies (UWI). This Graduate Programme is offered jointly with the adjoining United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI), operated by a consortium of Protestant denominations.
The duration of the programme normally is four semesters (full-time) and six semesters (part-time).
Participants will take four core courses (bible, theology, theological methods, research methods) and have the choice of seven specializations or concentrations:- Biblical Studies
- Theological Studies
- Historical Studies
- Ecumenical Studies
- Studies in Counselling and Pastoral Care
- Liturgical Studies
- Studies in Catechetics and Religious Education
Classes will be taught on-line, but examinations will be face-to-face proctored locally. Participants may choose 12 courses, or 10 courses plus a research paper.
To begin the Master’s Programme, participants must already have a first degree in theology, or at least 24 credits in second and third level undergraduate courses in theology.
Prospective applicants for the Master’s Programme may pursue undergraduate courses in theology at SMC in Jamaica (on-line) to obtain the credits needed to qualify for entry. Prospective applicants may begin taking these qualifying courses beginning in September 2021.

N.B. This is not an application form. Sending this information sheet to us does not commit you to entering the programme. Basically, we seek to obtain two bits of information from you:- If you did apply and are accepted, which of the above seven (7) specializations or concentrations would you be interested in pursuing? We need this information to avoid lining up lecturers for options in which no one is interested. Selecting an option does not commit you to pursuing that particular course of study. It is just to give us an idea of which options we should prepare to offer.
- We need to know your present academic qualifications, to know whether you might be able to immediately enter the MA Programme in September 2023, or whether you will need to take qualifying courses. Knowing your present academic qualifications allows us to be able to advise you which (and how many) qualifying courses you may need to take.
