St. Michael's College & Seminary, in association with the University of the West Indies offers the following B.A. programmes:
1. B.A. in Theology
2. B.A. in Guidance & Counselling
The Bachelor of Arts in Guidance and Counselling is designed to train professionals to serve youth and families in the education, community development and ecclesial sectors. It offers training in psychology, sociology, counselling and research skills, as well as specialized courses which prepare students especially to work in church, school and community to influence and bring about behaviour change. This programme is structured so that during the first year, students are exposed to introductory courses in the above subjects, and more advanced courses in the second and third years. Students are also required to conduct research in some aspect of guidance and counselling and to produce a research paper. After successfully completing the sixth semester, students will be engaged in a Guidance and Counselling Practicum in a collaborating school, church, or community endeavour.
Currently, the Jamaican government through the Ministry of Education funds one or more posts for Guidance Counsellors at public schools. There is an important need for guidance counsellors in schools (and churches and community organizations) because of the special needs of many students (and adults) who come from dysfunctional homes and communities. Healthy and well-adjusted persons also need reinforcement. Education is not only about exposure to academic, technical, and vocational subjects, but also about human formation – the transmission of appropriate norms and values which allow students to become productive adults in modern society, and themselves produce healthy families and communities. Accordingly, this programme has been developed to respond to this urgent need in our society of educating guidance counsellors with the skills and competencies required to provide wholesome guidance for students and adults.
Both programmes can be entered through the normal matriculation requirements for the Faculty of Humanities and Education at the UWI:
